Itinerary For: 9 Days Tour From Fes To Chefchaouen & Sahara Desert

Day 1: Arrive In Fes

Upon arrival in Fes, you will be greeted and transferred to your riad or hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you may have the opportunity to participate in an optional Moroccan cooking class that begins with a visit to a local market. This experience introduces you to the aromas, spices, and ingredients that define Moroccan cuisine.

Later in the day, enjoy a relaxed walk through nearby streets to begin experiencing the city’s atmosphere. The ancient medina offers a fascinating first glimpse into Morocco’s rich cultural heritage and lively urban life.

The evening is free for rest and relaxation after your journey.

Day 2: Fes

This day is dedicated to exploring the rich history and cultural significance of Fes. Accompanied by an experienced local guide, you will discover Fes el-Bali, one of the oldest and best-preserved medieval cities in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Walk through its winding alleys filled with artisan workshops and bustling markets. Visit the historic Al-Qarawiyyin University, recognized as one of the world’s oldest educational institutions, and admire the remarkable architecture of the Bou Inania Madrasa.

Optional activities may include a pottery workshop where you can learn traditional ceramic techniques or a cooking class that allows you to prepare authentic Moroccan dishes using ingredients from the local market.

Day 3: Fes – Chefchaouen

Leave Fes and travel north through the scenic Rif Mountains toward the charming town of Chefchaouen. Famous for its blue-painted streets and buildings, this peaceful mountain town offers a completely different atmosphere from the busy medina of Fes.

Upon arrival, enjoy a guided introduction to the town as you walk through its picturesque streets, quiet squares, and small artisan shops. The calming blue tones of the architecture, often associated with spirituality and protection, give Chefchaouen its unique character.

The town’s relaxed ambiance and beautiful mountain setting make it an ideal place to unwind.

Day 4: Chefchaouen – Volubilis – Ifrane

Enjoy a relaxing morning in Chefchaouen, where you may choose to take photographs or simply wander through the peaceful streets.

Later, depart for the impressive Roman ruins of Volubilis. During a guided visit, explore ancient mosaics, triumphal arches, and the remains of basilicas that reflect the region’s Roman history and its connection to Mediterranean civilization.

Afterward, continue your journey to the mountain town of Ifrane. Known for its alpine-style architecture and clean, well-organized streets, Ifrane is often called the “Switzerland of Morocco.” Its European-inspired atmosphere offers an interesting contrast to the traditional Moroccan cities visited earlier.

Day 5: Ifrane – Azrou – Midelt – Merzouga

Travel through the scenic Middle Atlas Mountains, stopping in the cedar forests near Azrou where Barbary macaques can often be seen living freely among the trees.

Continue through Midelt, a quiet town located between the Middle and High Atlas mountain ranges. As the journey progresses southward, the landscape gradually transforms from forested mountains into open desert plains.

Upon reaching Merzouga, prepare for one of the most memorable moments of the tour: a camel trek across the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset. As the sun sets, the desert sands glow with beautiful shades of gold and orange.

At your desert camp, enjoy a traditional Berber dinner followed by music around the campfire beneath a sky full of stars.

Day 6: Desert Excursion To Nomads

Today you will explore the Sahara Desert in greater depth. Traveling by 4×4 vehicle, you will visit a nomadic Berber family and learn about their daily life and traditions in the desert.

Continue to the abandoned kohl mines near M’fis village, an area that reflects the region’s historical mining activity. Later, visit the village of Khamlia, known for its Gnawa musicians who perform traditional spiritual music influenced by sub-Saharan African culture.

Adventure lovers may enjoy optional activities such as sandboarding or quad biking on the dunes. The day ends with another peaceful evening in the desert.

Day 7: Merzouga – Erfoud – Rissani – Midelt

After breakfast, leave the desert and travel toward Erfoud, a town famous for its fossil workshops where ancient marine fossils are crafted into decorative objects.

Continue to Rissani, an important historic trading center and former capital of the Tafilalet region. The traditional market here offers a fascinating glimpse into local commerce and daily life in the desert.

From there, travel through changing landscapes back toward Midelt where you will spend the night.

Day 8: Midelt – Meknes

Depart Midelt and continue toward Meknes, one of Morocco’s four imperial cities. During a guided visit, discover the impressive Bab Mansour gate and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, an important historical monument linked to the city’s imperial past.

Meknes offers a quieter atmosphere compared to other Moroccan cities while still showcasing impressive architecture and historical significance. You may also choose to participate in an optional cooking class to further explore Moroccan culinary traditions.
