Overview 5 Day Tour From Marrakech To Fes

The greatest advantage of this slower and carefully structured itinerary from Marrakech to Fes is the opportunity to spend meaningful time in the Sahara Desert, allowing travelers to fully appreciate its peaceful atmosphere and vast landscapes. Instead of simply passing through the desert region, this journey invites you to experience its quiet beauty at sunrise and sunset, discovering the unique rhythm of life in this extraordinary environment.

Your desert adventure begins with a camel ride across the dunes of Erg Chebbi, leading to an elegant luxury camp located deep within the desert. Far from villages and city lights, the Sahara reveals its most authentic character—endless golden sands by day and a magnificent star-filled sky by night.

Along the way, the landscapes of the Dades and Todgha valleys present a striking contrast to the desert scenery. Fertile gardens, small villages, and traditional Berber communities provide insight into rural life in southern Morocco, far removed from the busy streets of Marrakech.

The itinerary also introduces travelers to remarkable examples of traditional Berber architecture in the High Atlas Mountains. Among the highlights are Kasbah Telouet, the famous UNESCO-listed Aït Ben Haddou, and the beautifully restored Kasbah Amredhil in the Skoura oasis. Together, these historic sites illustrate Morocco’s architectural heritage and the ingenuity of its ancient desert communities.

Itinerary For: 5 Day Tour From Marrakech To Fes

Day 1: Marrakech – Skoura

Your journey begins at 8:30 AM with departure from your hotel or riad in Marrakech. The route quickly ascends into the High Atlas Mountains via the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka Pass, offering breathtaking views of mountain peaks and traditional Berber villages scattered across the slopes.

After crossing the pass, you leave the main road to visit Kasbah Telouet, once the residence of the powerful Glaoui family, who ruled much of the Atlas region. Although the interior of the kasbah has been closed following structural damage caused by the September 2023 earthquake, its exterior and historical significance can still be appreciated with the assistance of a knowledgeable guide.

From Telouet, continue through the scenic Ounila Valley to reach Aït Ben Haddou. After lunch, explore this famous UNESCO World Heritage Site, considered one of Morocco’s most remarkable fortified villages and featured in numerous international films. Its traditional earthen architecture and elevated position demonstrate the ingenuity of historic desert construction.

The journey then continues through Ouarzazate before reaching the palm oasis of Skoura, where you will spend the night in a peaceful setting surrounded by gardens and palm groves.

Day 2: Skoura – Dades Gorges

The Skoura oasis is home to many historic kasbahs hidden among dense palm groves. Some remain in ruins while others have been carefully restored. In the morning, visit the impressive Kasbah Amredhil, one of the best-preserved examples of traditional southern Moroccan architecture.

You may also enjoy a short walk through the oasis, where olive trees, fruit orchards, and traditional irrigation channels sustain local agriculture.

Continue toward Kela’a M’Gouna in the Valley of Roses, famous for its annual Rose Festival and the production of rosewater and cosmetic products used throughout Morocco.

From there, the route becomes more adventurous as it follows smaller roads that allow closer appreciation of the surrounding landscapes. Along the way, you may encounter caves used by Berber nomads during seasonal migrations, where sharing a cup of mint tea offers a glimpse into their resilient lifestyle.

After lunch in the Dades Gorge, the afternoon is free to explore the valley at your own pace. You may take a walk along the river, relax in the peaceful countryside, or visit nearby gardens. Overnight stay in a welcoming guesthouse.

Day 3: Dades Gorges – Merzouga

After breakfast, continue toward Tinghir and the impressive Todgha Gorges. Here, towering limestone cliffs rise dramatically on both sides of a narrow canyon. A short walk through the gorge allows you to admire its impressive scale and natural beauty.

The journey then continues toward the Erg Chebbi dunes through Tinjdad and the Tafilalet oasis near Erfoud, famous for its annual Date Festival. Another important stop is Rissani, birthplace of the Alaouite dynasty, Morocco’s current royal family.

Between Tinjdad and Erfoud, you may also visit the traditional underground irrigation channels known as khettaras, an ingenious system designed to conserve water in this arid environment.

Lunch will be served in a small Berber village along the route.

Upon arriving in Merzouga, begin your camel trek into the dunes of Erg Chebbi. As the sun sets, climb a high dune to admire the spectacular desert sunset. Dinner and overnight stay will take place in a luxury desert camp equipped with private bathrooms, comfortable beds, and traditional Moroccan décor.

Day 4: Merzouga

After breakfast, you can choose between two different desert experiences.

The first option is a full-day camel trekking adventure. Either riding the camel or walking beside the caravan, you will travel deeper into the Sahara while your guide prepares lunch in a remote desert location. After several hours of exploration, you will return to the camp in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.

The alternative option is to explore the wider desert region by vehicle. Visit the village of Khamlia, famous for its Gnawa musicians whose traditions originate from sub-Saharan Africa. Continue to Rissani, a historic desert town known for its lively market and ancient fortified villages.

In the afternoon, enjoy another camel ride across the Erg Chebbi dunes to watch the sunset before returning to your luxury camp.

Please note that during the hottest months of the year (May to September), camel trekking activities may be adjusted to ensure comfort and safety.

Day 5: Merzouga – Fes

After breakfast, depart Merzouga and travel to Rissani, where you may visit the local market. Continue to Erfoud to observe how ancient marine fossils—evidence of a prehistoric ocean—are transformed into decorative stone products.

The journey then continues north through Errachidia and the beautiful Ziz Valley, known for its extensive palm groves. Lunch will be taken in Midelt, often referred to as Morocco’s “Apple Capital,” located in the Middle Atlas Mountains at an altitude of 1,508 meters beneath Mount Ayachi.

Continue across the Tizi-n-Talremt Pass toward Azrou, where you may encounter Barbary macaques living among the cedar forests—trees highly valued for their aromatic wood used in fine carpentry.

By early evening, you will arrive in Fes, one of Morocco’s most historic imperial cities. Your driver will escort you to your riad, marking the end of your five-day desert journey from Marrakech to Fes.
